Erste Ausgabe, die auch im Oktavformat erschien. - William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) war Professor für Botanik an der Glasgow University und ab 1841 erster Direktor der Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. In dem vorliegenden Werk widmet er sich den Moosen und anderer Kryptogamen Nord-, Mittel- und Südamerikas und der Pazifikregion, darunter Australien und Neuseeland; zahlreiche der beschriebenen Arten stammen von den Reisen von Alexander von Humboldt und Aimé Bonpland sowie Archibald Menzies, Robert Brown, Christian Fr. Hornschuch u. a.

Index und Errata. - ZUSTAND: Die breitrandigen Tafeln nur gering gebräunt und insgesamt sehr sauber. Textbll. tlw. leicht fleckig und mit schwachem Abklatsch der Tafeln, ca. 5 Textbll. in Teil II stärker wasserfleckig. Kanten etw. beschabt, Gelenke gering berieben.
