Firmenich/Lukas 64. Upper left signed and dated. On the reverse with an old label, inscribed "Münchener Neue Secession / Frau mit 2 Männern / Jos. Scharl München 20 Maillingerstr. 15/IV" by hand. Titled and inscribed with dimensions on a label on the reverse, as well as inscribed "43 Frau mit 2 Männern" and numbered "C - 732" by hand. 51.5 x 67.5 cm (20.2 x 26.5 in).

• Unlike his contemporaries Otto Dix or George Grosz, Scharl does not use satire but more restrained means to visualize man in line with his social demands, just as it is the case here.
• Knowledge of the mask pictures by the Belgian James Ensor becomes obvious here.
• Scharl created a new definition of the portrait, which, since the 1925 Mannheim exhibition, has been referred to as "New Objectivity“
