Much like his father - an accomplished alpinist who completed numerous first ascents - Edward Harrison Compton was passionate about the alpine landscape and the stunning, ever-changing natural beauty of the mountains. In the 1930s, Compton mostly traveled to the Loisach Valley and the Werdenfelser Land, where the Zugspitzbahn train had provided easy access to the peak of the Zugspitze mountain since 1930. The Zugspitzplatt plateau offers a breathtaking view over the imposing snow-covered mountain ranges lined up one after another. The blue-tinged sky and wash-painted mountain ranges reveal the yellowish watercolor cardboard below, creating the impression that Compton was actually on top of the Zugspitze at the golden hour to capture this idyllic moment in the watercolor painting offered here. The passing clouds add to the artistic effect of the changing light atmosphere, emphasizing the deserted, cool alpine landscape with its blue translucency of air and light. [JG]
