Russell Young in an interview for the Heather James Gallery, YouTube, May 2020, quoted from: www.youtu.be/EsVHYhV_uP8.

At the beginning of his artistic career, Russell Young worked as a photographer and director of well-known music videos. He portrayed, among others, bands, film and rock stars such as Björk, Bob Dylan, Morrissey, Paul Newman, New Order, Diana Ross and Bruce Springsteen. In the 1990s he turned to painting and discovered serigraphs based on photographic templates for his artistic work. The present "Marilyn Crying x 2" is also based on a famous photograph by George Silk from 1954, which, was also on the cover of the famous Marilyn Monroe biography "Goddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe" by Anthony Summers from 1985. The black-and-white photograph shows Monroe in the back seat of a limousine in front of her Beverly Hills home shortly after the press conference at which she had announced the end of her marriage with the baseball star Joe DiMaggio after only nine months. Lost in thought, she seems to be wiping a tear from her cheek at that very moment.

In 2007, the artist used "diamond dust" for the first time. It is applied onto the previously painted or silk-screened canvas in a complex process, and with the incidence of light, the work sparkles and shines and also glows in an impressive three-dimensionality. The artist expresses his fascination as follows: "I am well known for putting diamond dust on my paintings. The first time I did it was in 2007 [..]. I hung this first one up on the wall and I was so excited about the three-dimension and how the whole thing came to life. I woke up about two o'clock in the morning just to look at it again and the moonlight was actually hitting it. I took it outside and I hung it on one of the trees out here and I just couldn't believe how it was in the full moon! So I just fell in love with the whole process and how three-dimensional the process is when it comes to life.
