Obwohl es erst zwei Jahre nach Vesals Fabrica erschien, war es im Manuskript schon 1539 weitgehend vollendet. Die Vorarbeiten gingen sogar bis Anfang der 30er Jahre zurück. Die schönen Holzschnitte, von denen einige signiert und 1530-32 datiert sind, werden u. a. G. B. Rosso, Jean Jollat und P. Woeiriot zugeschrieben.

Certainly it was the finest printed in France in its century, and the sixty-two full-page woodcuts, artistically presenting the anatomical subjects in special poses before unusual background settings, are unusually sumptuous and imaginative" (Heirs of Hippocrates).

EINBAND: Lederband des 20. Jahrhunderts unter Verwendung alter Deckelbezüge mit goldgeprägtem Wappensupralibros (mit 3 liegenden Mondsicheln und 3 Muscheln). 38,5 : 25 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 62 ganzseitigen Holzschnitten und ca. 100 kleinen Textholzschnitten sowie großer Holzschnitt-Druckermarke auf dem Titel und zahlreichen Criblé-Initialen. - KOLLATION: 12 Bll., 375 (recte 379) S. - ZUSTAND: Stellenw. gering (stock-)fleckig, wenige Markierungen in Tinte. Titelblatt mit 2 Randausschnitten, 1 Tafel am seitl. Rand mit Ausschnitt, wenige kl. Randläsuren, 1 Textbl. im Bund angerändert sowie mit restaur. Einriß. Einbd. leicht berieben. Insgesamt gutes Exemplar.

First edition of the finest anatomical work of the Reformation. With 62 fullpage woodcuts, ca. 100 smaller woodcuts in text, woodcut printer's device and numerous criblé initials. - 20th cent. calf using old covers with gilt coat of arms supralibros. 38.5 : 25 cm. - Here and there slightly foxed, few marks in ink, title page with 2 cutouts and 1 plate at fore edge with a cutout, few marginal defects, 1 text leaf with retored tear and remargined in the gutter. Binding slightly rubbed. Altogether good copy.
