With the 'Jünglingsgruppe' (Group of Youths) Hofer reverts to a theme that he had already used in earlier compositions. true to his late style, the composition has now become disengaged from any narrative elements. The object of the picture's expression is the figures' formal entanglement in an almost swaying rhythm. It is like a sublimation of everything that Hofer had been experiencing on a long journey. Turning to the pure form is the result of a long period of searching the core of the matter, a search to which everything redundant has been sacrificed. [KD].
