Horae B. M. V. - Latin book of hours. Manuscript on vellum France or Flanders, 2nd half of 15th century. 105 ll., of which three white. Size of leaves ca. 16 : 11,5 cm, text area ca. 9,6 : 7,2 cm. Littera textualis, written in black brown ink. 18 lines, slugged. With 4 large miniatures in gold and colors, surrounded by tendril borders of acanthus ornaments, blossoms and fruits (among others, with strawberries), 8 historicized initials in gold and colors with three-sided border of acanthus leaves, blossoms and fruits, 13 decorative initials in gold and colors with three-sided border in the same make as mentioned above, as well as numerous single- and double line initials in gold and colors. - New red velvet binding, in red morocco case.
Splendid and richly illuminated book of hours from northern France or Flanders. The fine large-sized miniatures show, among others, Coronation of the Virgin, Annunciation. The high-quality meticulously executed miniatures in the 8 large initials are particularly charming and presumably originate from a different painter. They show Mary with the child, John the Baptist, archangel Michael (overthrowing Satan), St. George (killing a dragon), Anthony the Great, Saint Christopher, Saint Catherine (with broken wheel), Saint Barbara (writing a letter to Origines, with tower). - Lacking 1 l. in the calendar (Sept.-Oct.). Slightly stained in places of lower margin. All in all very nice and well-preserved manuscript.
