Fritz Winter, who was born in 1905, began his carreer as an artist at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he studied under, among others, Kandinsky, Klee, Albers and Schlemmer. Following his days at the Bauhaus, Fritz Winter abandoned figuration in the 1930s and began his “abstract still lifes", thus attaining an individual style that allocated him a special position with the Informel. In the 1960s he made the so-called Rectangle- and Serial Images, to which this work belongs. During this period of creation the primacy of color prevails and his compositions are dominated by color surfaces. Strips of dazzling colors appear, at times side by side, at times overlapping, which dissolve in a glimmer towards the margin and either merge or form a contrast. Far from figuration Fritz Winter created emotions and moods like in a piece of music, however, by means of colors and strokes of the brush.
