After the early nail pictures from the late 1950s were still characterized by a strictly serial arrangement and symmetrical order, these rigid structures were broken up in the early 1960s and the nails were now arranged in seemingly incidental positions forming moving clusters and fields. An effect of motion and depth is achieved by the nails' irregular arrangement. This effect is even increased by the interplay of light and shade. The artist is intensively occupied with questions of how a structure can be set in motion through the integration of light, through density and weight balance. Uecker manages to add an illusion of airy motion to the rigid material in a unique manner.
