After his studio in Dresden was destroyed in February 1945 and his troublesome flight to Westphalia, Böckstiegel arrived at his birthplace Arrode as a broken man scarred by the events of the war. This work is the first and presumably only painting that Böckstiegel made during this dramatic year.
