Negendanck 39. Lower right barely legibly monogrammed and dated "W [?] 8". Dated, titled and inscribed on the stretcher by a hand other than that of the artist. 57 x 42 cm (22.4 x 16.5 in) [JS].
• Outstanding early painting and a haunting illustration of the terrors of war.
• Paintigns by the early deceased expressionist artist are extremely rare on the international auction market.
• To date only 15 other paintings have been offered (source: artprice.com).
• The work "Selbstbildnis mit weißem Gesicht" from 1917, thematically a forerunner of our work, is in the collection of the Brücke-Museum, Berlin.
• Currently the Kunsthalle Hamburg honors the artist with a comprehensive exhibition titled "Walter Gramatté und Hamburg".
