Erich Heckel’s “Schiffe im Kanal (1. Fassung)” captures a nighttime harbor scene that allows the viewer a direct sense of the moment’s atmosphere. The painting depicts two moored ships, their masts standing out dark, almost black, against the deep blue evening sky, while the water shimmers in bold, almost vibrating shades of blue and gray. The greenish-yellow quay wall draws the eye into the depth of the scene and also divides it into the warm tones of the houses and the cool tones of sky and water. Heckel’s brushwork is particularly striking: the colors are not applied smoothly, but in short, expressive strokes that lend the painting a lively texture. The water appears to be in motion through wave-like brushstrokes, while the buildings and ships are rendered in clear, albeit rough, contours. This painterly freedom reveals the nature of the “Brücke” group's art. Together with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and other fellow artists, Heckel sought a new, emotionally charged visual language.
