• Until 1930, the Bauhaus in Dessau was the center of the young Fritz Winter's life: he studied under, among others, Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
• One year before our work was created, Fritz Winter left the Bauhaus and began his artistic career as a freelance artist.
• Despite financial difficulties, he continued to work on new forms of artistic expression with great creative drive.
• Early, pioneering work in which Winter staged symbolic-abstract forms that are rich in contrast against a black background - as it will become characteristic of his later "light paintings".
• Fritz Winter is regarded a leading representative of German Informalism
.

"mr. winter clearly achieved initial artistic independence. [..] the free painterly works [..] testify to a strong inner experience and the ability to achieve individual expression through design."
Paul Klee on Fritz Winter, Bauhaus diploma, 1931, quoted from: Gabriele Lohberg, Fritz Winter. Leben und Werk, Munich 1986, p. 18.
