Besides drawings, lithographs and etchings Picaso also turned to linocuts. It is particularly this technique that Picasso leveraged to a new meaning and importance. Together with the printer Hildargo Arnera, he at first made linocuts for posters of bull fights and ceramic exhibitions. Picasso discovered the technique for his own art and wrested new perspectives from it, which found manifestation in a completely new formal conception as a consequence. Printing from several plates, as required by the classic linocut in colors technique, offers Picasso the opportunity to playfully handle the medium. The large portrait heads of Jacqueline Roque, whom Picasso met in Vallauris in 1953, marrying her in 1961, became characteristic of this period. Our sheet shows her in the typical earthen color triad, which the artist made the basis for his large-sized work. [EH].
