Rose Sommer-Leypold studied from 1929 until 1932 at the Stuttgart Art Academy, where her most important teacher was Anton Kolig. She was in his master class and became his assistant in the early 1940s. Despite her talent and her desire to become an art teacher, she had to give up her work as an artist. Nevertheless, numerous portraits of women and self-portraits have survived to attest to her mastery of portraiture. Here she has deployed broad brush strokes to capture with great poise the personality of an elegantly dressed lady. [NB]
