The renowned artist shows an unmatched mastery in capturing the beauty of the sea and the depiction of various types of ships. He prepares his motifs with numerous studies and sketches, which he manages to vary and alternate, an ability owed to his great experience. He depicts the three master under partly reefed sails in the mouth of the Elbe, the red fire boat and other different ship types make for the background under a slightly clouded sky. The artist masterly captured the atmosphere of a clear and windy day.
