• Early work from the famous matches series of the pioneer of 20th century art.
• Together with artists such as Arman, Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely, he signed the first manifesto of Nouveau Réalisme in 1960.
• He participated in documenta in Kassel in 1968 and 1997, and was posthumously represented in the main exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2017.

"SAFFA" is an early example of Hains' iconic series of oversized matchbooks, which he began in the mid-1960s, revisiting it in the early 2000s. The title is the acronym of an Italian tobacco company. Made by a carpenter according to his instructions, Hains' matchbooks challenge the notion of authorship. Playing with the idea of the readymade, the works move between humor and seriousness, aesthetic pretension and thingness
