"The Berlin 'Street Scenes' represent Kirchner's most important group of works. [..] They are a product of the modern city. [..] Swiftness of capture, simultaneity of movements and impressions, maximum tension and emotion, the staccato drawing and painting style are the distinguishing features of works that Kirchner created in all techniques and which represent a pinnacle in his oeuvre."

Magdalena M. Moeller, in: Magdalena M. Moeller, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Die Straßenszenen 1913-1915, Munich 1993, p. 24.

In the glaring artificial light of the street lights and shop windows, passers-by stand close together, meet and seem to be talking to each other or turn away from each other. Kirchner observes the hustle and bustle of this busy place, captures it with a focused gaze, reduces the surroundings and yet concentrates the monumentality of the big city in this drawing. Strong strokes in colored chalks emphasize the figures' initial contours, contrasting them against the background of the facades seen in the neon light of the billboards. [MvL]
