Phillips 4280. - Cf. Borba de Moraes II, 511 and Sabin 44130 (on the French first edition from 1683). - Second German edition of the well-known description of the earth by the French engineer A. M. Mallet (1630-1706). "... ce livre est surtout recherché pour les figures; l'auteur ayant beaucoup voyagé avait levé lui-même la plupart des plans qu'il a fait graver pour son livre. Bayle dit que 'c'est un ramas curieux de mille choses'." (NBG XXXIII, 69). - These parts describe northern countries as well as Asia and Africa. the planets and maps are re-engravings from the 1683 edition (Phillips 3447); showing, among other, views of Manila, Beijing, Nanking, Goa, Tokyo, Miaco, Erivan, Jerusalem, Medina, Algiers and the Canaries etc., also with portraits of natives, statesmen, folkloristic scenes (e. g. coral fisher) as well as various armillary spheres, ships, animals and plants. Teh maps show continents, countries and parts of countries, maps of islands and coasts, maps of deserts, and several maps of the moon, zodiacs, planets and constellations. - Incomplete and defective copy: lacking various coppers as well as several register sheets at the end. Different degrees of damages caused by water, stained and somewhat softened by damp, several splits and paper blemishes.
