Nieuhof, J., Voyages & travels, into Brasil, and the East-Indies: Containing an exact description of the Dutch Brasil, and divers parts of the East-Indies ... 2 parts in 1 vol. With portrait copper, title copper, 45 copper plates (27 double page), 33 coppers in the text (among them 3 maps) and 4 double page copper maps. London, A. and J. Churchill 1704 (title copper: 1703). 18th century calf. Folio. 4 ll., 152 (of 156) pp., pp. 181-284, numb. ll. 285-286, pp. 287-369.
Nissen Zool. 2976. - Hunt II, 409. - Cox I, 288. - Sabin 13015. - Alden/Landis 703/112. - Tooley, Mapmakers III, 326. - Brasilien-Bibl. Bosch 159. - Cf. Lipperheide Md2; Landwehr VOC 282; Muller 1146 (all first editions). - Collection of Voyages and Travels, parts I and II. - First English edition. The two travelogues were first released in Dutch in Amsterdam in 1682. - Nieuhof (1618-72) was working for the Dutch West India Company in Recife for many years, where he gathered useful information on Brazilian economic life. Later he travelled to China, East India and Madagascar. - The nice coppers show exotic plants (cocoa, cucumber tree, üineaple) and animals (fish, coati, etc), various views and plans (among them of Amboina, Olinda, Recife, St. Helena) as well as customs and costumes, maps of Brazil, Cape of Good Hope, Malabar and Madura, as well as Batavia and islands. - "Classic work on Dutch Brazil ... bound together with the account of another voyage by Nieuhof to the East Indies ... Both were issued in several collections of voyages, including the Church collection. Modern bookdealers have broken up the collection and bound the different voyages separately which leads some to the wrong conclusion that an independent edition of Nieuhof's work exists in English" (Borba de Moraes II, 614). - The number of plates varies from copy to copy, as plates with several illustrations had been cut apart. The plates in this copy seem to be complete, just lacking layer P (pp. 53-56). - Some of the coppers in the text are slightly faded, ca. 10 ll. with small wormtracks in the lower white mrgin, 2 ll. with marginal tear, 1 plate with small defective corner, few ll. with browning, title with water stains as well as with two erased ex-libri on verso and stamped on recto. Spine (and endpapers) renewed using the old material. All in all fine copy with isolated blemishes.
First English edition. With engr. portrait, engr. title, 45 copperplates (27 doublepage), 33 engravings in text (3 of them maps) and 4 doublepage engr. maps. 18th. century calf. - Lacking quire P (pages 53-56). Few text engravings in flat impression, ca. 10 leaves with small wormtraces in the foot of page, 2 leaves with marginal tear, 1 plates with defective corner, some leaves with brown stains, title waterstained and vo. with 2 partly cancelled ex libris, rc. stamped. Spine (and endpapers) renewed, using old material. Altogether fine and nearly stainless copy.
